Amazing Riona
My name is Riona Manicaro and I am 14 years old. I live in Malta. I started showing dogs when I was 9 years old. I became Interested in dog showing because my parents used to show dogs.
My favourite breeds are Border collie, Beagle and Basenji. Why are they my favourite? Well, the Border Collie has an incredible temperament, the Basenjis are really smart dogs but they can also be funny at times, and the Beagles have an amazing character. From the cuddling to the barking, you will know that they are Beagles!
I find that the difficult part for me in showing is trying to control the excitement that I have before entering the ring. It is really difficult for me but I manage. I start to train my dogs when they are still puppies so that they will learn early. When a difficult dog comes in my hands, the first thing that I do is that I bond with my dog. I build a relationship with the dog knowing that he can trust me.
I also take part in the Junior Handling competition and I have been competing since I was 10 years old. One of the best experiences I have had in the ring was when after two years, for the first time I placed first. Dog shows come with wins and losses, I have learnt to accept the outcome of each show. I hope that this year I will represent Malta in the Junior Handling competition at Crufts. This would be my ultimate dream.
In the photo you can see me with my dog RBIS JCH/MCH Alotorius Old Glory Crystal Ball. It was the Blue Lagoon International Show. I had good results and I won Best in Group 2.
My aim at the dog shows is to enjoy myself and to present my dogs well.
